Jonko Auto Diagnosis Center: Squeal While Braking

Squealing Noise While Braking

If you notice a loud squeal when you are braking you typically have a minor problem that is more of an annoyance than a major issue. The squeal is a result of the movement of the brake pads moving across the rotors. Walk through the steps below to diagnose and trouble shoot your brake squeal.

1. Brake Heavy and Brake Light
Compare the brake noises when you are braking. If the noise is generally more apparent when braking lightly, you probably can just add some anti-squeal paste to your brake pads to eliminate the problem. make sure that the pads are still in good condition and apply the paste (or have your mechanic do so) to eliminate the noise.

If you notice the squeal while braking "hard" or heavily, you might have a bit greater problem that requires you to switch to an alternate type of pad for your vehicle. Certain brake pads squeal more than others and changing to an alternate material often will eliminate the noise.

2. Make Sure You Are Braking
In some newer vehicles you will hear the "brake squeal" while driving. This is a noise emitted by a "low brake warning device." The squeal is the device telling you that your car is due for a brake check up to replace and worn parts.
